Deck the Halls! Celebrate a Family Christmas in the South on Jekyll IslandCelebrating Christmas in the South (or anywhere else?) this year? Jekyll Island transforms into "Holiday Island" through January 1st, and is a great place families to spread the Christmas Spirit. Christmas Tree Lighting Festival - Holiday Island kicks off in November with month long festivities. The Christmas Tree Lighting Festival starts November the 28th, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This is just the first of many fun events happening on the island during the holidays. The festival orbits around the Historic Center. Families can enjoy holiday stage performances, arts and crafts vendors, games and activities for children. Have your picture taken with Santa, and participate in hayrides, holiday shopping sprees, delicious hot chocolate and savory Christmas treats. Fred McKinnon and the Worship Under the Stars Band will provide live music starting at 6:30, to be followed by Santa and Mrs. Claus lighting the Jekyll Island Christmas Tree. The fun starts at 4:30 PM and continues until the lighting of the Christmas tree and fireworks finale at 7:30 PM. Admission to the festival is free, although some activities may require a small fee. It's a perfect sendoff for Christmas in the South. Christmas Bike Ride - The Jingle Bell Bike Ride is an 18-mile family bicycle ride around Jekyll Island. It's sponsored by the Coastal Georgia Greenway and the Jekyll Island Authority. Families should gather at the Jekyll Island Beach Deck, just south of the Jekyll Island Convention Center. By registering online in advance you can get discounted rates, along with a chance to win brunch for two at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel. Registration also available at the event from 8:00 – 9:00. Jekyll Island Club Hotel Candlelight Tour - Take a VIP tour of the Jekyll Island Club Hotel dressed in its Christmas finery - a Christmas in the South traditon. Your guide will take you on a candlelight tour of the Grand Dining Room, the lobby, and other public areas. See live evergreen trees, wreaths on every door, and garlands with red velvet bows as you hear the story of the hotel. Afterthe tour, refreshments will be served. There's no cost for the tour. Gingerbread House Workshop - The Jekyll Island Club Hotel’s famous pastry chefs have all the parts ready ahead of time for this 2-hour, family friendly workshop. Put them together, add icing, decorate, and make gingerbread trees and flowers. And bring your camera! You'll want to preserve memories of artistic creations and kids covered in icing! Imagine Christmas through the ages as you venture inside the cottages of Jekyll Island's National Historic Landmark District and experience the holidays from the Victorian Era to the Jazz Age. Dickens Christmas in the South Musical Dinner Theater - Gather in the Boar’s Head Lobby of the Jekyll Island Club Hotel on December 12th for a toast to Christmas Present. Follow the merrymakers into the Grand Dining Room for a holiday feast and musical dinner theater. Based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, the Atlanta acting company revisits Christmas with Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit, Scrooge, and a host of other colorful characters. Reservations: 912-635-2600. 7:30 PM. Christmas Caroling - You'll need warm coats and caps for this musical family event, which takes place outdoors on December 23rd. Meet on the Riverfront Veranda of the Jekyll Island Club Hotel ready to sing favorite carols at Crane and Cherokee Cottages, the Club and Sans Souci. Sing such classics as “Jingle Bells,” “Deck the Halls,” and more. Cookies and punch served afterwards. Free. Reservations: 912-635-2600.
