Fill Your Family Summer Vacations with Activities Geared Towards Adventure!

Your family summer vacations should be filled with fun and adventure. After all, you're escaping the run-of-the-mill, the average, the rat race of work or school, for a few weeks of family fun in the sun. You deserve the exciting experiences you're looking for.

Jekyll Island is an adventure paradise, with more exciting things to do, see and experience than you can shake a stick at. But be prepared to pace yourself. With so many fun activities (calling to you like Sirens from a reef), it's easy to over-do it. You could wind up like we have before - exhausted by the middle of the week!

But don't worry - there are plenty of quiet, shaded nooks on Jekyll Island where you can lay back, relax, and recharge your batteries for the next adventure.

If your family summer vacations normally include boating and sailing, you can charter a sailboat cruise at Weadore Sailing.

Come to the island by boat? Park it at Jekyll Harbor Marina.

Trailering your own boat? Jekyll Island's renovated boat ramp enables you to launch at either high or low tide.

Want to explore Jekyll Island and surroundings by sea kayak? Book a trip through Tidelands Nature Center, or Up the Creek Expeditions out of St. Mary's, Georgia.

Jekyll Island offers fishing opportunities of all kinds. Charter an off-shore fishing expedition, and hook into tarpon, mackerel, amber jack, or flounder.

If inshore fishing is more your style, you can fish the edges for redfish, trout or bass - or throw out a line from Jekyll Island's covered fishing pier.

Several island ponds provide young kids an opportunity to catch bream or bass on baited hooks.

A great place to gear up (or buy a Georgia fishing license) is Maxwells, in the Beachside Shopping Center.

Rather have a guided fishing trip? Captain Larry Crews can take you to fishing hot-spots both inshore and offshore. And while on the island don't forget to visit his Jekyll Fishing Center.

Like to hike on your family summer vacations? Round up the kids and join a nature walk to learn how the other half lives - the "Wildlife" half, that is.

Or hit the beach for a sea turtle walk, and learn about loggerhead turtles and their nesting habits.

Here's a neat idea. Grab a light backpack, a bottle of water, and set out on an impromptu expedition to explore Jekyll Island on foot.

Another good way to see Jekyll is to rent a bike from one of several bicycle vendors on the island. Jekyll has over 20 miles of paved trails,, and several more miles of "off-road" paths through the woods. Bike trails criss-cross the island, and there's no destination that can't be reached by pedal power.

You can -

  • Bike Along the South Loop
  • Explore the Historic District
  • Roll Along the Golf Course Trail
  • Check Out the North Loop
  • Enjoy Bike Sight-Seeing Side Trips
Bike riding is our preferred mode of travel around the island, and a great way to explore with children.

Family summer vacations can also be educational. For different perspectives, take the guided tours. A few of our favorites:

Head out looking for dolphins with a Dolphin Tour via Coastal Georgia Charters & Tours from Jekyll Wharf Marina.

You can get an osprey-eye view of Jekyll Island and her fellow Golden Isles and their coastal environment. Charter Capt. Bill Buyan's Cessna Skyhawk out of St. Simons.

A good way to see the Historic District is to take a Tram Tour. You can hop a tram at the Jekyll Island Museum and learn all about Jekyll's storied past in style.

And if you've ever wanted to ride a shrimp boat, you can hop aboard the Lady Jane, berthed at Spanky's Restaurant Dock in Brunswick, Georgia. Your kids can learn where their shrimp really comes from, and the work that goes into catching them. You can even eat a few, cooked up fresh from the sea by the Lady Jane's captain.

Itching to get your fingers on hidden treasure? Legend has it that pirates buried their loot somewhere in the island's interior. I can't tell you how to find Blackbeard's hoarded gold, but I can introduce you to Geocaching. Your kids will love this interactive experience.
For a real thrill, try kite boarding or kite buggying. Fly over the waves (or zip over the sand) under a giant self-controlled kite - it's a fun way to really wear yourself out! If you're not up to the physical challenge of kite boarding or buggying, try flying the smaller performance kites on the beach.
If your past family summer vacations have included large hoofed animals, saddles, cowboys (or girls), and the sweet smell of...hay...then you'll enjoy horse back riding on Jekyll Island!

Beach horseback riding is a great family fun activity. Victoria's Carriage and Trail Rides can set you in the saddle for a horse back excursion that includes a ride along beautiful Driftwood Beach.
Jekyll Island offers adventures for the whole family, no matter what your age or interest, from challenging mental and physical activities to more passive, laid back experiences.

Family summer vacations should be memorable, and leave you longing to come back for more. And there's always more to see and do on Jekyll Island!
