Reasonably Priced Georgia Vacation Rentals on the Marsh Side of Jekyll Island Provide Serenity
As Georgia vacation rentals went, Riverwalk Cottage was one or our best picks. From my chair on the front porch of the Riverwalk Cottage on Riverview Drive I watched the sailboat cruise down the Intra-coastal Waterway. Its sails were furled and it was running under power, but I could barely make out the purr of its engine. It was a beautiful, relaxing sight, and I was content, sitting in the shade, sipping a Diet Coke. I was on Jekyll Island, watching boats float by like dreams on the Waterway. The Riverwalk Cottage at 403 Riverview Drive is our favorite cottage on the marsh side of the island. We rented this one from Parker-Kaufman. We didn't realize until we got there what fantastic vistas we'd have of the marsh and Jekyll Creek. When we're at Riverwalk, we spend a lot of time in the cool of the evening watching boats slide along, or deer nibbling browse at the side of the road, or raccoons making their fastidious way through the marsh grass. Birds of all kinds fly by constantly.
History in Your Back Yard Another plus - you're only a few steps away from the Historic District and the Millionaire's Village. Step outside, turn left up Riverview Drive or Old Plantation Road, and you're there - the entire Historic District within walking distance. You can easily walk to the Courtyard at Crane, the Grand Dining Room, Latitude 31, the Rah Bar, or Cafe Solterra for lunch or dinner, or check out the many shops and historic cottages in the area. The Riverwalk cottage also has the perfect view of the Intra-coastal Waterway. Georgia vacation rentals don't get any better than this!
The Perfect Breakfast Room One added attraction for staying at Riverwalk is the public picnic table that sits just across Riverview Drive from the house. We like to fix our breakfast and take it out to this table and eat, with the Intra-coastal Waterway as our "breakfast room". Be on the look-out for the inquisitive raccoon who likes to drop in for breakfast, hoping for a handout. We like this simple ritual so much that even when we don't stay at Riverwalk, we'll sometimes pack up a light meal in the mornings and head over to the picnic table for breakfast.
The Best in Marsh Front LivingThe 2 marsh front Georgia vacation rentals on Jekyll Island I'm aware of occur along Riverview Drive between the ruins of the brewery and the Jekyll Island Airport. This section of the island is quieter and more secluded. The Marshview cottage at 415 Riverview Drive is the second home with a great view of the Intra-coastal Waterway. (We've never stayed here, so I can't compare it directly with Riverwalk.) Most of the homes on Riverview that overlook the marsh are owned and occupied by island residents. Some of these may be available for lease by-owner at various times of the year. Only Riverwalk and Marshview are listed by Parker-Kaufman. I'm not aware of any marsh view homes listed by Jekyll Realty. Come back often for updates - I'll keep a weather eye out for new availabilities.
The Skinny on Riverwalk and Marshview CottagesWhat can you expect in these marsh-front Georgia vacation rentals? Vacation cottages offered with style and grace and plenty of down-home hospitality, all for your family's pleasure, for one. Here's what you get: Riverwalk will accommodate six guests in 3 spacious bedrooms. Two of the bedrooms have queen beds, the other two single beds. You'll also find 2 full baths, a fully-equipped kitchen, a living and a dining room, a screened porch, and a patio. There are several amenities to make your visit more pleasant - a washer and dryer, 2 TVs with DVD and VCR players, a stereo, Playstation II, and WiFi. A dishwasher and microwave oven also come with the rental. The patio is perfect for grilling shrimp on the barbie, and in fact comes with a grill. Marshview welcomes up to six guests with amenities similar to Riverwalk. There are 3 bedrooms, one with a double bed, the other two with 2 twin beds in each room. It also has a "Marsh View" room, with wrap-around windows looking out towards the Intra-coastal Waterway and the Marshes of Glynn. Plus 3 TVs (but no WiFi connection or Playstation). Leave the pups and kitties at home - the owners of these Georgia vacation rentals don't allow pets. Or smoking.
Rental Rates and Reservations In-season weekly rates for Riverwalk in 2009 run from February 28 through August 14. The in-season rental fee is $1,075. If you come in May, you'll only pay $875. From January 1 through February 27, and again from August 15 through December 31, is off-season, and the rate for Riverwalk is $760. Marshview rates are $815 for a week during the high season, $735 for May. $645 reserves you an off-season week. Want some advice? If you don't have kids, come to Jekyll in October. It's the perfect season. Days are still warm, but not baking hot. Nights are cool. There's a freshness in the air, a crisp quality denoting Autumn. And with kids in school, the island is quieter, more laid-back. There's not as much of the summer haze; scenes seem to leap forward in their clarity. October, in my opinion, is the best month to be on Jekyll Island. September's pretty good, too - especially late September, when the Wild Georgia Shrimp and Grits festival is going on...
