Island Time at Jekyll Books -
I love a good book. And there's something really appealing about curling up on a sheltered veranda and spending an afternoon reading while a soft rain falls over Jekyll Island, just beyond your cozy hideaway.
You can experience this in it's entirety at Jekyll Books. Whether your taste runs to the latest non-fiction self-help book, the new Stephen King thriller, or you just want to learn more about Jekyll Island, this wonderfully eclectic bookstore is the place to go. You can purchase your favorite book here, and then read it on their wide, shaded veranda, ensconced in one of their comfortable old chairs.
One of the best new or used book stores I've seen, this Jekyll Island book store makes its home in the old Jekyll Island Club infirmary building. This Victorian original was first built as the Furness Cottage. Later, Joseph Pulitzer owned it for a time. Then the Goodyear family bought it and donated it to the Jekyll Island Club for use as an infirmary. It's now a premier book store owned by Steve and Leigh Baumann.
What kind of books do the Baumanns stock?
They also offer a selection of t-shirts and tote bags, as well as CDs.
You can easily spend an afternoon browsing among the plentiful stock available at the Baumann's store. You'll find books everywhere you look, upstairs and down. It's an adventure just exploring the many rooms of the old infirmary, seeking out Jekyll Island literature, or historic and regional stories.
A bookstore is seemingly filled with possibility, a portal into other worlds. And reading is still one of the least expensive forms of recreation.
Let reading a good book be a part of your Jekyll Island Family Adventures. Buy a book or 3 or 5. Get one or two for the kids. Then curl up on that veranda, and enter a whole new world, if only for the space of a rainy afternoon.
Oh, yeah. While there, keep a weather eye out for the store's resident ghost, rumored to haunt the aisles of the old Infirmary. Who knows? You might find it seated on the veranda beside you, catching up on it's reading.
More than likely a ghost story.
