Jekyll Island Airport lies directly parallel to the Intra-coastal Waterway. It's one of Georgia's quaint coastal airports, and the perfect plane travel venue, allowing you and your family to get to your island paradise fast and in style - by air.
There are several other airport alternatives, and I'll get to them in a moment. But first, let's explore the J.I. airport.
This Coastal Airport is Perfect for Flying Families -
As coastal airports go, this small airport is just right.
It has one runway, numbered 18 & 36, depending on which direction you're approaching from.
Runway 18 has a heading of 179 magnetic, 174 true. 36 is 359 magnetic, 354 true. Both are asphalt, 3715' long and 75' wide.
The airport is open to both private and charter plane travel, provides tiedown service, and is lighted from dusk to dawn.
Travelers can rest up after their journey at the airport headquarters building. It's small but well-kept, and comes complete with a lounge equipped with comfortable chairs and a small table.
And restrooms! (Which you'll be thankful for if you're flying in from a distance and your bladder's as small as mine). At this writing, the headquarters building is open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Once you're on the ground, you'll need transportation. At the airport, you can rent an electric car from Redbug Motors - the perfect vehicle for tooling around the island.
Or check with your favorite car rental companies operating out of Brunswick. They should be glad to deliver a car for you, and have it waiting when you arrive.
While you're waiting for your rental car, check out the remains of the Confederate Cannon Battery, which run adjacent to the runway. You can't approach them because of the airport, but you can relax in a small picnic area and get a look. To reach the viewing area from the airport, follow North River View to the historic marker. The marker is on the left just past Captain Wiley Road, adjacent to the fence by the airport runway.
You can reach Ronnie Smith, the Jekyll Island Airport manager, at (912)635-4075.
Other Nearby Area and Coastal Airports -
If you'd rather fly into the area on a commercial flight, there are several international airport options.
One is in Savannah, Georgia (SAV), and the other in Jacksonville, Florida (JAX). Both are only an hours drive from Jekyll Island.
Check out their rental car and limousine services for transportation to the island. Or take a "puddle jumper" charter flight to Jekyll Island Airport.
If you fly into Brunswick's Golden Isles Airport, you can catch a regular-scheduled flight through Atlantic Southeast Airlines (ASA/Delta Connection) out of Atlanta (ATL).
The Golden Isles Airport also has a full complement of rental auto services.
Plane travel is an option if you have the funds for it. Hey, if it gets you to your Jekyll Island Family Adventure faster, it just might be worth it!
